Bone broth isn’t a new concept. So where did it come from?
It all began with hunter gatherers who started making bone broth out of necessity. Every part of the animal was valued, including the hooves, bones, guts and skin, because successful hunts were so uncommon.
Their creations included tools, clothing, weapons, and shelters made from inedible materials. But, other animal parts, including bones, knuckles and hooves, were too tough to chew and could not be utilised to make clothes or shelter. Therefore, our ancestors burned them. As a result, the quickly discovered that applying heat could weaken robust animal bones and aid the extraction of nutrients.
Initially, our ancestors most likely used animal carcasses which they dropped hot rocks into in order to heat up and disintegrate the bones.
Then lo and behold… the pot was invented!
So, in turn, they could add bones to the pot and hang it over a fire for a few hours. Then, by adding additional easily obtained ingredients, our ancestors could prepare an entire meal.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Bone broth was used in Chinese medicine for supporting kidney and digestive health.
Traditional Chinese medicine states that bones are connected to the kidney system. As a result, you are nourishing your kidney by eating bone marrow.
Nowadays, bone broth is frequently used as the base for various Chinese, Korean and Japanese soups as it became a staple of traditional Asian cuisine.
Palaeolithic Period
The Palaeolithic era took place 2.6 million years ago and is also known as the Old Stone Age.
People during this time would have lived the hunter gatherer lifestyle as they depended on the hunting of animals and the collecting of other foods such as fruits, nuts and edible plants to survive.
The Palaeolithic diet, also known as the Stone Age or caveman diet, consists of meat, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, eggs, seeds, and nuts.
The diet is based on the idea that if we eat like our ancient ancestors, we will be healthier and reduce our risk of certain diseases.
Who was Hippocrates?
Hippocrates was an Ancient Greek physician and is traditionally known as “the father of medicine.”
He was born in 460 BC on the Greek island of Kos, and later established a medical school around 400 BCE.
The concepts he placed on diet and the idea that medicine was a science still hold true today. He believed that diet played a crucial role in maintaining good health. Therefore, he would recommend bone broth to people with digestion issues.
By no means is the importance of our gut health new, and Hippocrates presented this in one of his famous quotes, followed by others;
“All diseases begin in the gut”
Hippocrates
“The greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it.”
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
